A whopping 2.1bn (£1.84bn) in extra tax would have gone into UK coffers if the billions of illicit and counterfeit cigarettes consumed in the UK were sold legally Cigarettes Online, a report has found.

Some 5.5bn illicit cigarettes were smoked in the UK in 2016, one of the highest levels in Europe, according to a new KPMG study.

It reckons there are 48bn illicit cigarettes consumed in the EU, Norway and Switzerland - equivalent to 9pc of all those smoked on the Continent - which is more than the total volume of legally purchased cigarettes in France.

The study, carried out by KPMG for the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI) Marlboro Red Cigarettes, said the scale of the illicit and counterfeit cigarette industry represented "major organised crime on an international level".

Ms Haenlein added that the criminal groups behind the illicit cigarette trade were often loose, transient networks, which made it harder for police to identify.

"In order to minimise loss in the event of detection, the groups involved increasingly adopt a 'little and often' approach to C smuggling," she said Wholesale Cigarettes.

"This involves splitting illicit cigarettes into numerous, smaller consignments, which are sent along an array of routes and channels. This allows goods to fly under the radar of law enforcement, reducing potential losses and enhancing the profits to be made."
